REVEALED: The best locations to live in Oxfordshire, according to you!

At Oxford Property Consulting, we will forever champion our great county and its diverse range of locations, education provisions, professional opportunities and attractions.

But even in a landscape touched by Oxford’s historic cobbled streets, the beauty of the Cotswolds and scenic Chiltern Hills, a favourite location for those who know Oxfordshire better than anyone – its residents – must exist.

And to our delight, Woodstock – the town in which Oxford Property Consulting was founded – has been named as the best place to live locally!

It follows a poll conducted by Muddy Stilettos where it asked readers to vote for the best village, town or city to call home in 2024. So, what better opportunity to explore Oxfordshire’s most desired spots – and those tucked away locations which missed out on the public vote.

History, experiences, community and local charm

Positioned right on the eastern edge of the Cotswolds and on the doorstep of World Heritage Site Blenheim Palace, Woodstock’s history dates right back to 12th century.

It was then when King Henry II gave Woodstock a Royal charter. Today, 3,100 residents call Woodstock home with the town known for its unique boutiques, art galleries and antique shops with tearooms, coffee shops, pubs and restaurants lining the town’s high street.

Woodstock is best known internationally as the location of Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, which welcomes approximately 800,000 visitors each year. Beyond the palace’s lakes, gardens and off-track walks, it is home to a packed events calendar including an annual Christmas lights trail, horse trials and live music events.

For locals, the town holds a prime position either side of the A44 connecting Chipping Norton to Oxford which can be reached in less than half-an-hour by car. Nearby train stations Combe and Hanborough operate daily services to central London lasting 90 minutes, and there’s a primary and secondary school.

The above combined with a strong sense of community makes Woodstock a prime location in Oxfordshire for people to call home. Properties sell for an average of £586,000, although luxury homes in the area will comfortably sell for £3m upwards.

Highly commended

Among other locations recognised by Muddy Stilettos’ poll were Wallingford, Watlington, Henley-on-Thames, Goring, Charlbury, Burford, Whitchurch-on-Thames and Warborough.

Beyond the Top 10 we have a few of our own favourite locations within the team at Oxford Property Consulting including:

Ascott-under-Wychwood – average property price, £1.1m

Located between Chipping Norton and Burford in the heart of the Cotswolds, Ascott-under-Wychwood has huge appeal to families.

The village has its own train station and primary school, with easy access to private higher education via nearby Kingham Hill School, Burford School and The King’s School near Witney.

Beckley – average property price, £470,000

Without attachment to the Cotswolds, away from the River Thames and a short drive from the convenience of Oxford, it’s easy to understand why Beckly can fall under people’s radar.

In reality, this quiet village home to just over 600 residents is perfect for those seeking smooth access into Oxford while in search of the country lifestyle.

Dorchester – average property price, £741,000

Best known for Dorchester Abbey, Dorchester-on-Thames is a picturesque spot in the south of our county, just a 20-minute drive from Oxford city centre.

A primary school is in the heart of the village, with pubs and restaurants too. Train services are accessible via nearby Culham, Appleford and Didcot.
