Why can’t I have it all?

I am often asked by people, “why can’t I have it all?” It seems like a simple question, but the answer is normally one which they don’t want to hear; sometimes it just isn’t possible to get everything.

Doing your Research

When you start your property search you have an idea of what you are looking for, where you want to find it and how much you are able to pay for it. You may want a 5 bedroom detached house with a garage, in the best postcode and within a “good budget”, but you can only find 4 bedrooms within your price range and location. Don’t despair though, you’re not the only one who can’t find their ideal home.

So, how can you get one step ahead of the competition? Compromise. The sooner you realise that exactly what you want might not be achievable, the sooner you will find the right property.

Here are a few ways in which you can compromise:

  • Be open-minded to you property requirements. Write down a list of what you must have and what you would like to have. You may have to compromise by letting go of some of your “likes”.
  • Be flexible on your location. You may have a set idea of exactly where you want to live, but by opening up your search radius you may find the ideal home at the right price.
  • Look for somewhere you can add value. Don’t be scared of buying somewhere which you can improve. This can enable you to get the ideal property in the ideal location for the right price – it just means that you might have to put up with builders for a while.
  • If you won’t compromise on your property or location be prepared to up your budget. You may have to pay more than you originally wanted to get everything that you want.

So why can’t you have it all? Well, with a little bit of compromise you can nearly have it all, so try to be open to changing your search criteria and take a massive step towards finishing your property search successfully.
